Derek Stewart Looked To Tri Swimming

Derek Stewart of Strathaven, South Lanarkshire has done the ultimate in endurance sports, Ironman triathlons.

It is his love of a challenge that has pushed him into the open water including for his 70.3 and full Ironman competitions and an upcoming 10 km marathon swim. Like many triathletes, he has to juggle his swimming with his biking and running workouts which is not easy for a serial entrepreneur.

I practice swimming twice a week currently,” explains the triathlete whose favorite swimming location is Loch Lomond. “I’ve set myself the following goals for 2014; 53-mile Ultramarathon, the Avenger 70.3 Ironman, and a 10 km river swim.”

That is a huge change from when he first got into triathlons at the age of 46 but could only swim 40 meters. “It’s been a good week from a training point of view. Two great swimming sessions where it looks like I’m getting faster in the water. I even learned to tumble turn.”

Stewart will take on the Dart 10K, organised by the Outdoor Swimming Society, a 10 km swim down the River Dart in Devon, England. The swim is not a race, but a participation swim where swimmers can swim at their own pace downstream in brackish water through the rolling hills of Devon to the waterside village of Dittisham.

No tumble turns required.
