Diary Of A Double With Antonio Argüelles – Week 10

Diary of a Double documents the year-long journey of Antonio Argüelles who will attempt a 67 km two-way crossing of the English Channel in September 2021. Throughout this journey, Argüelles describes his pool and open water swimming workouts, preparation, nutrition, dryland training, and coaching for his solo channel swim that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
This week he did another tough workout in Las Estacas river – both upstream and downstream – under the watchful eye of coach Rafa Álvarez.
During this interview, Argüelles also mentioned his use of KAATSU to help with his recovery and his sleep quality as measured by WHOOP.
Argüelles is an Honor Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame who was completed the Oceans Seven and Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, and who will be 62 during his crossing in an attempt to break the two-way English Channel crossing record of Rick Seirer at the age of 59 years 351 days (in 29 hours 46 minutes).
A two-way crossing is also referred to as a double crossing.
Like swimmers around the world over the first part of 2020, Argüelles was locked down in his home and unable to swim during the COVID-19 pandemic. He postponed his attempt and dealt with the disappointment and issues that everyone also has had to face on a personal, logistical, physiological, and psychological basis.
It has not been easy – and his success going forward will neither be easy nor guaranteed.
In October, Argüelles is participating in the WOWSA Distance Challenge, an online event that includes the 10k Challenge and the 100k Extreme Challenge. The 10k Challenge is a challenge for one individual to swim 10,000 yards or meters in a pool or in the open water during the month of October. Participants can swim 10,000 yards or meters all in one session or multiple sessions swum throughout the month. The 100k Extreme Challenge is a challenge for one individual to swim 100,000 yards or meters in a pool or in the open water during the month of October. Participants must swim an average of 3,325 yards or meters every day for 31 days or swim over multiple sessions throughout the month to achieve this challenge – goal that Argüelles will undoubtedly achieve.
