Donald Watkinds Commentates On La Jolla

Donald Watkinds has been the race announcer of the biggest and longest continuously running open water race in America, the La Jolla Rough Water Swim in California.

“I have been announcing La Jolla since 1971 together with Florence Chadwick was also swimming the event and have been announcing for a long time.

In a few years, the renowned multi-race event, that started in 1916 and annually attracts over 2,200 swimmers will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

He has so many stories from the participants over the years. “I remember the time that Ryk Neethling won the race. He had competed in the Olympics before in the 1500, but he got the call that South Africa wanted him to train for the 100 and 200. He went on to win the gold medal in the South African 400m freestyle relay.”
