The renowned marathon swimmer Kevin Murphy calls it “going for a little dip.”
Rick Walker, Head Coach of Southern Illinois University, is working hard to introduce the “going for a little dip” concept to college swimmers in the United States.
“This weekend, we will host our annual Saluki Mile (1650 yards) in the pool on Friday and the Saluki 5K Open Water Swim on Saturday. Illinois State will be joining us this year. All swimmers swim the 1650-yard freestyle event in the pool on Friday and then the 5 km on Saturday morning.
For distance swimming, this is a great way to get our distance swimmers their events early in the season as they usually get in shape quicker and have the least opportunities to swim their events. Distance swimmers are usually left out of being able to hone their talents within [many opportunities]. I think a balanced program tries to incorporate all their athletes at the times best for them.”
It should be a good competition with the 2011 world 25 km championship bronze medalist Csaba Gercsak of Hungary, former FINA World Cup winner Mazen Aziz of Egypt, and Kristen Groome who has finished in the top 10 at World Championships scheduled to compete.
