Double The Fun In The Ederle Swim

Ederle Swim applications will open on March 1st. The always popular event which sells out fast is doubling in size this year. “Imagine swimming to Manhattan Island under the Verrazano Bridge and past the Statue of Liberty,” said race director Morty Berger.

It will be a super fast tide in comfortable water temperatures between 67-72°F (19-22°C). Most people will finish between 4.5 to 5 hours this year in the expanded field of 20 people. It will be a far cry from 2010 when the event was delayed a few days due to weather and the water temperature dipped down to a cool 56°F (13°C).”

Online enrollment for the Ederle Swim will begin at 1:00 pm New York time on March 1st. The event, always popular among experienced English Channel, Catalina Channel, Molokai Channel, Tampa Bay and Manhattan Island Marathon swimmers, will be on a fast tide on October 1st. “That means warmer water temperatures, fast times under 5.5 hours with some projected finishes around 4.5 hours and, hopefully, some slack from Mother Nature that will allow us to have the finish on Manhattan Island,” predicted Morty.

There will also be a new wrinkle this year. “Similar to the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, the top two finishers in Ederle Swim will be given the opportunity to swim for the course record, either one-way or round-trip, on a fast tide during the 2012 summer season.

And like the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, registration fills up extraordinarilz quickly. Morty advises, “If you are planning to apply, please study the application procedures and policies prior to March 1st and prepare as much of your application as possible before registration goes live online.”
