John Cater, an 82-year-old ocean swimmer, surfer and attorney from Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on his beloved Oahu with his family at his side.

Back in 1968, Cater watched the surfing movie Endless Summer and was convinced Hawaii was for him. He moved to the islands and never left, picking up surfing and ocean swimming.

The stalwart surfer won numerous amateur surfing contests, he eventually hung up his surf board at the age of 78. But his ocean swimming career was even more impressive.

He was a member of the Waikiki Swim Club and who competed in the first 25 Waikiki Roughwater Swims,” recalls its race organizer Jim Anderson.
