Exciting Weekend at the Traversée des Salines: Highlights and Results

The Sables-d’Olonne Natation club hosted the fifth edition of the Traversée des Salines on June 8 and 9. It featured five open water swimming competitions in a saltwater lake (Chnoue basin), in the Sauniers area of Sables-d’Olonne. This year there were 250 participants from all over France, 50% more than other years. The water temperature was 18.2 C.

The weekend kicked off with the 500m Discovery event, LE NOUCH, followed by the 300m relay, LE DUO, which included heats, semifinals, and finals. The main attractions were the longer distance races for the French Cup and Regional Cup. They were the 5,000m LES BARGES, the 2,000m LES PETITES BARGES, and the 10,000m ROCHEBONNE.

The 2024 Traversée des Salines added a 700 EUR prize for the combined 5,000m and 10,000m winner, besides the classic podium places.

Competitors and supporters could relax and refuel on site with barbecue, paninis, fries, crepes, and cakes. The event also served as a training ground for some Ironman 70.3 Les Sables-d’Olonne – Vendée candidates, scheduled for later this month.

The highlight of the weekend was the 10,000m Olympic distance race. Brest native Julien Pichot won for the second year in a row, finishing in under two hours. 16 years old Enzo Doussot impressed everyone by securing fifth place in 2 hours and 7 minutes.
