Ronnie Wong, the chairman of the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee [see here], oversaw the FINA Open Water Swimming Technical Congress in Budapest, Hungary today. He and his colleagues approved the new rules of the respective disciplines for the period 2017-2021.
1. Removal of the Chief Race Judge’s role, as this position is no longer required
2. Recognition of the Chief Referee’s role as the primary official responsible for the conduct of the competition
3. Terminology consistency in all rules relating to the finish wall
“While we were not in attendance at this Congress, I wonder if the national governing bodies are concerned about the use of wetsuits as dictated by the new FINA rules or the example of FINA representatives organizing races where the water temperature is above 31°C?” pondered Steven Munatones.
