FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix Kicks Off

The fastest echelon of marathon swimmers is gathering this weekend in Rosario, Argentina at the Circuito 18° Marató Acuático Internactional “Ciudad de Rosario”for the start of the 2012 FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix. The 15K race will kick off a series of eight races in Rosario, Santa Fe-Coronda (Argentina), Hernandarias-Paraná (Argentina), Capri-Napoli (Italy), Lac St-Jean (Canada) Lac Memphremagog (Canada), Šabac (Serbia) and Ohrid Lake (Macedonia).

17 men and 11 women from eight countries will take the departure in Rosario. 2011 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year and two-time defending Grand Prix champion Pilar Geijo and last year’s Grand Prix runner-up Andrea Volpini of Italy are considered the favorites.

But there is one swimmer – Petar Stoychev, the 11-time defending Grand Prix series champion – who will not be in Rosario. He is focusing on qualifying for his fourth Olympics, trying to end his magnificent career on a high note in the Serpentine on August 10th at the Olympic Marathon Swimming 10km.
