Freedom Swimmer by Olivia Martin-McGuire

Olivia Martin-McGuire is an Australian documentary filmmaker and photographer based in Hong Kong. Her artistic focus and voice resonated with the release of the documentary film Freedom Swim and a feature film documentary, ChinaLove, for ABC Arts, which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and internationally at DOCNYC.

Freedom Swimmer, recently shown at the Kendal Mountain Festival in the UK, is a 15-minute documentary film about a man’s story of his perilous swim from China to Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution, which Martin-McGuire both wrote and directed. The hybrid, poetic documentary interweaves hand-drawn animation and film.

Olivia Martin-McGuire has exhibited throughout Australia and China in galleries, museums and photo festivals. She is part of a group of photo and video journalists called Eyes On China, and currently developing several new hybrid documentary projects and a television series in China.
