From the Ocean and Trash to Streets and Highways
Nzambi Matee from Nairobi, Kenya found a company (Gjenge Makers), a manufacturing system, and a market to make plastic trash into roads and streets. She explains, “We are a social enterprise whose goal is to provide strong, beautiful and durable construction products made from cement and polymer concrete. In addition to tackling the prevailing plastic waste pollution in Kenya and Africa at large by converting the waste plastic into alternative building products. Our mission is to innovate solutions to create beautiful and sustainable alternative construction products for Kenya and the African continent. Our vision is to provide sustainable and affordable alternative building materials whilst creating job opportunities for youths and women and to promote a recycling and upcycling culture in Kenya and Africa.”
This is not the only solution, but it can make a small impact. Create many small impacts and then the world can be changed. Imagine if all the plastics that flow into the waterways of the world were reclaimed and reused for such alternative uses.
