The 228 meter Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim is set for this Saturday, February 26th in Lake Tahoe, California. Gar Woods Grill & Pier and Bacardi USA will be hosting the 33rd Annual Polar Bear Swim.
Swimmers may sign up for US$30 at Gar Woods or online at www.garwoods.com.
Ashley Anderson of the Tahoe Restaurant Collection explains, “Gar Woods will provide complimentary appetizers after the swim along with our famous raffle. There are two categories: Men & Women. Swimmers must be over 18 years to participate. The course is approximately 250 yards and the water is frigid. US$300 for first place, US$150 for second place, US$50 for third place while all participants get a commemorative souvenir.”
The cold water swim (sub 5°C) is part of North Lake Tahoe SnowFest, the annual Mardi Gras in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is one of the world’s longest running high-altitude swims that are defined as open water swims held at least 1,000 meters above sea level:
