Get Ready To Rumble! In The Open Water

The athletes and coaches at the USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships have prepared for years for today’s 9:30 am New York time start of the all-important 10K race.

The men and women have trained relentlessly, sacrificing much for this opportunity. The best of America and Canada will be racing like they never have before, in this all-important step to the 2012 London Olympics.

But when they arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this week for the World Championship qualifier, the weather went south – windy, wavy and frankly a bit scary for some of the athletes.

Due to the crashing surf, the finish structure was deemed unsafe to make it through the surf. Under those circumstances, the race officials decided to place the finish structure in waist-deep water inside the breakers which means a 50-meter sprint to the finish following the final turn. It will undoubtedly be an exciting finish with berths to the World Championship on the line. If the athletes do not qualify for the World Championships, they have no hope of going to the 2012 London Olympics.

So not only is navigational IQ, endurance, speed and racing tactics necessary to secure a spot on the national team, but body surfing was play a part – or at least railroading will.

Stay tuned and watch the live streaming of the USA Swimming National 10K Open Water Championships.

The athletes have all been taught to Expect the Unexpected, but the reality of the situation will hit the athletes hard today.
