“It ain’t easy,” doesn’t give justice to swimming between the Farallon Islands and the California coast. Vito Bialla reported that Joe Locke swam and was pushed ten miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes with the help of a 5.8-knot ebb tide, but then the fury of the Red Triangle defeated him. “We encountered brutal conditions. There were 15-18 foot swells with cresting whitecaps and blowing hard at 2 am. Our antenna snapped off the boat because the whiplash was so intense. We had to call the swim and Joe did not argue.
