On May 12, 2024, the picturesque shores of Boca del Río, Veracruz, came alive with the spirit of competition and camaraderie as over 800 swimmers participated in the 11th edition of the Gran Travesía Aguas Abiertas Gran Retto Veracruz. This event has grown into a premier sports festival, attracting athletes from across Mexico to test their limits in the azure waters of the Gulf.

Top Performers Break Waves

The 10-kilometer race saw fierce competition, particularly in the final stretches. Mariana Hernández Romero from Mexico City claimed victory in the women’s division with a remarkable time of 3 hours, 9 minutes, and 59 seconds. On the men’s side, Missael Hernández Rosado from Xalapa emerged victorious, completing the course in 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 58 seconds, narrowly edging out competitors in a thrilling finish.

In the 7-kilometer distance, the winner in the women’s division was Itzel Perez Sandoval of Mexico City with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 37 seconds. In the men’s division, Victor Mollinedo of Puerto Angel Pochutl was the winner with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 33 seconds.

The Gran Travesía is unique in its inclusivity, offering multiple distances to cater to various age groups and skill levels—from the 500-meter dash to the grueling 10-kilometer marathon. This structure not only promotes the sport of open water swimming but also encourages participation from the community, making it a family-friendly event where everyone can find their challenge.

Team Spirit and Local Impact

The team competition added an extra layer of excitement, with “18 de Marzo” taking the lead among groups, demonstrating the strength in numbers and strategic teamwork with 51 swimmers. Local teams like Chicoloapan with 34 swimmers took second place and third place for Ajolotes Galeana with 27 participants enhancing the event’s community feel.

Gran Retto, the event organizer, played a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless experience for all. From logistics management to ensuring safety, kit distribution, and assistance along the routes, every detail was meticulously managed so that swimmers could focus solely on enjoying the challenge and the beauty of the sea.

A festive atmosphere of camaraderie filled the beaches of Boca del Río, where family and friends gathered to support their competitors. Music, entertainment, and various side activities created a perfect environment to celebrate the sport.
