Swimming World Magazine interviewed Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy after his absolutely dominating performance at yesterday’s 2019 USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships when he beat the best swimmers of America by over a minute.
Paltrinieri is off to go train at high altitude in Arizona after his victory. He seems to be relentless in his training and pursuit to follow up his 2016 1500m freestyle Olympic gold medal performance with additional gold medal performances in Tokyo next summer.
His plans in 2019 FINA World Championships in July include the 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle in the pool and the 5 km team relay and 10 km marathon swim in the open water.
Based on his performance in Miami and his 1500m swim at the 2019 Italian Swimming Championships* in the pool, if there is anyone who could pull off a Mellouli Double, it is Paltrinieri.
* At the Italian Swimming Championships in April, Paltrinieri won the 1500m in 14:38.34, finishing well ahead of Domenico Acerenza in 15:12.96, reminiscent of his open water victory in Miami.
