Gunnar Werner To Head FINA Task Force

FINA announced the creation of a Task Force who will investigate the causes and circumstances of the tragic loss of Fran Crippen on October 23rd during the last leg of the FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

The FINA Task Force has a goal to “guarantee clearness with regard to this tragedy”.

The Task Force will be composed by:
– One expert of a recognised International Life Saving organisation
– One expert in Cardiology and Sports Medicine (specifically in “sudden death” cases)
– Two experts appointed by United States Aquatic Sports/USA Swimming
– One expert in law (FINA)

The FINA representative is Sweden’s Gunnar Werner, acting President of the Court of Arbitration for Sport and a FINA Honorary Member, who already started FINA’s investigation on this case following the conclusion of the race in Fujairah. Gunnar was the FINA Liaison for open water swimming back in the late 1980s when the sport was not yet fully integrated into the FINA program, so he has a good grasp on the sport and the focus and lifestyle of its top athletes.
