Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Invitational Rough H2O Swim

The 30th Possibly Annual Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Invitational Rough H2O Swim is back with its beautiful 7K (4.33 miles) course and dry humor.

Entry forms to the U.S. Masters Swimming race, hosted by Jim Anderson on December 4th, can be requested here. The race starts and finishes on Kaimana Beach, near the Diamond Head Volcano in Waikiki on the island of Oahu. The race is a non-wetsuit, no-drafting race where swimmers can face strong and tricky currents

The race director’s humor comes out in his pre-race instructions and information:

• First place in each age category MAY receive an award.
• For those who can still function, an Awards Dinner will be held after the swim
• Fill in your application using your computer. The objective being “to be able to read the application.” Most swimmers have been traumatized by their doctors and, as a result, write like them
• Don’t forget the check when mailing in your application. We have emotional attachment to checks.

Jim, who was one of the key individuals to organize the 2000 World Open Water Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii is serious about safety and he makes no jokes about the inherent risks in the sport and his event. The race waiver that must be signed by the swimmer reads as follows:

I am applying for entry into the 2011 Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Invitational Rough-H20 Swim. I fully realize that events of this nature could entail a great deal of risk to me, both for serious injury and even death. I also realize that this event could not be held unless I am willing to assume all consequences of these risks. Therefore, I assume full responsibility of informing myself as to all dangers and risks and I sign this waiver as a legally binding method of personally assuming all these risks. In consideration of acceptance of my entry, I, intending to be legally bound, do hereby for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, waive, release and forever discharge any and all rights and claims for damage which may hereafter accrue to me against the State of Hawaii, the City & County of Honolulu or the Organizing Committee, its officers, agents, representatives, sponsors, associates, successors and/or assigns for any and all damages which may be suffered by me or my escort in connection with my association or entry in this event. I have read the particulars on the reverse side of this form and understand that this is a physically taxing event, which should be undertaken only by individuals that are excellent swimmers and who are in a very good state of physical conditioning. I agree to obtain and have an escort, who is in a very good state of physical condition, on a paddle board, kayak or other similar type human powered device accompany me at all times throughout this event.
