Waipiʻo Valley is a valley located in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Waipiʻo means “curved water” in the Hawaiian language.

It was the capital and permanent residence of many early Hawaiian aliʻi (kings).

The valley floor at sea level is almost 610 meters (2,000 feet) below the surrounding terrain. Waterfalls at the back of the valley are sources of fresh water that flow out to the ocean. The beach is a marvelous location that has changed remarkably little relative to other open water swimming venues around the world.
