How An Average Joe Gets On Television

“If I can achieve the impossible in the water, I can achieve great things in all aspects of my life,” says Ryan Stramrood, a self-admitted Average Joe.
But there is simply nothing average about this South African Joe. His lifestyle is no average; his mindset is not ordinary. He is quite simply extraordinary.
“You are capable of certain stuff physically…until your mind tells you that you are capable of more. Swimming is solitary: you are facing down, you see stuff there, it keeps you alive, describes the late-blooming ice swimmer from Cape Town.”
He has recently been very much alive – during an unprecedented swim in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland where he was filmed swimming for a television program on extremists. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide, but it is 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland.
