How Many Olympic Swimmers Are There?

The International Olympic Committee and LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) has allocated 950 individuals to participate in the 34 swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

50 of those swimmers (25 women + 25 men) will compete in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim and the rest will participate in 32 pool races (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, individual medley and relay events from the 50m to 1500m).

While several marathon swimmers also competed in the pool at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (e.g., Keri-Anne Payne, David Davies, Cassandra Patten, Kristel Köbrich), there will probably be fewer crossover athletes in the pool and open water in 2012.

Today in Adelaide, Australian open water swimming champion Melissa Gorman will attempt to also represent her country in the 800m freestyle. She is currently seeded fifth going into the finals at the Australian Olympic Trials.
