Ian van der Hulst Sets Record In Kalamata – Koroni Marathon

Ian van der Hulst of the Netherlands won the 22nd annual Kalamata – Koroni Open Water Swimming Marathon, a 30K (16.5 nautica mile) swim across the Messiniakos Gulf from Kalamata to Koroni in Greece.

Under calm seas, light winds and 26°C (78.8°F) waters, Ian was followed by two professional marathon swimming women to lead the field of 16.

To top off his victory, Ian closed fast and broke the long-standing record of Egypt’s Mohamed Marouf, set in 1993, by one minute.

The night before the annual 30K race, 37-year-old Attila Manyoky attempted the first three-way 90K crossing of the Messiniakos Gulf. After 19 hours of swimming, he had swam 58K but feel ill an was taken to the hospital. He recovered and is now back in his home country of Hungary.
