Ice Swimming Among Three Sisters In The Wilderness

Ice Swimming Among Three Sisters In The Wilderness

Broken Top is an dormant volcano sitting in the center of the state of Oregon, nestled within the Three Sisters Wilderness.

When we heard stand-up paddle boarders have discovered this geological wonder and regularly drive up within 5 miles (8 km) of the glacial lake at 9,000 feet (2,743m) to then hike the rest of the way with their paddle boards in the summer months, we figure it is only a matter of time before ice swimmers also start to discover this challenge at Broken Top.

The stand-up paddle boarders, protected with their neoprene booties, paddle over submerged icebergs sitting below the surface of the perfectly tranquil lake staring down into the glassy, clear waters. Like English swimmer Colin Hill who hikes up and then ice swims at the top tarn near the top of Old Man of Coniston in the Lake District in England, paddle boarders may soon share time with ice swimmers doing laps in the 0.8 km glacial lake.
