A number of renowned ice swimmers were invited to participate in a demonstration ice swimming event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games on February 2nd. The ice swimmers had planned to swim with a number of national flags behind the Olympic Torch to help usher in the Winter Olympics.
Unfortunately, due to terroristic acts in Vogograd and the subsequent concerns over security issues before the Olympic Games, the ice swimming exhibition was cancelled.
A showcase for Russian ice swimmers like Alexander Brylin and Sergey Popov as well as swimmers from Ireland to South Africa, and America to China, the organisers are currently discussing alternative plans after the Games have concluded.
Brylin and Popov are shown participating in a flag-carrying ceremony in 2ºC (35.6ºF) water with fragments of ice floating about in the Amur River.
