IJsselmeer Zwemmarathon Honored By The Hall Of Fame

50 years of history – 50 years of organizing one of the world’s most well-known marathon swims – 50 years of challenge and greatness were recognized by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame that will induct the famed IJsselmeer Zwemmarathon as an Honor Contributor – Organization.

The 22 km IJsselmeer Zwemmarathon is one of the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims and the premier marathon race of The Netherlands.

Ned Denison, chairperson of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, describes the event, “The swim is held across the former Zuiderzee. The sea was dammed in 1932, now named IJsselmeer. Much of the eastern part of the former sea has now been transformed to land, but the Dutch have preserved the northern and western part as a fresh water basin where the swim takes place.

The start of the swim is in the harbor entrance at Stavoren, site of a former fish auction. The finish ends in Medemblik in front of a pub (‘t Swarte Woifke also known as Muziekcafé Brakeboer), 22 km southwest at the harbor wall of the fish auction.

The swim is difficult because it is conditions are usually very choppy with surface waves as the body of water is only 1.5 to 5 meters deep.”

Denison explains the history of the event, “The IJsselmeer Zwemmarathon started out as a dare of sorts in the preparations of Dutch channel swimmer Jan van Scheijndel, an Honor Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in the Class of 1985 [see photo below]. He was trainer and coach with The Hague Swim Club DES. He set out from Stavoren to swim to Medemblik in 1969, thought to be nearly unimaginable at that time. Certainly, it had been done before in the freshwater era.

Other shorter crossings had been pioneered in the saltwater era before the sea was dammed in 1932, but these pioneering swims had been forgotten at the time. The actual swim started in reasonably well circumstances. The weather, as can be expected, dramatically changed during the swim. It was said that a gale pounded one of the best marathon swimmers of the era. The people of Medemblik were astounded that someone could safely swim under these conditions.

One of spectators of the epic crossing was the father of the current owner of Muziekcafé Brakeboer. Together with DES, he initiated the annual tradition of the event.”

De IJsselmeerZwemmarathon is de meest vooraanstaande marathon in Nederland. In 2019 is het evenement voor de 50e maal georganiseerd. De zwemtocht is over de voormalige zuiderzee. De zee werd ingedamd in 1932 en heet nu IJsselmeer. Veel van oostelijke deel van het IJsselmeer is nu land, waar wij Nederlanders om bekend staan in de wereld. Met de toenmemende zorg om het milieu is het noorden en westen behouden gebleven als zoet water bassin. In dit water vind de wedstrijd jaarlijks plaats.

De start van de wedstrijd is in Stavoren en de finish is in Medemblik. De start vindt plaats tussen de havenhoofden ter hoogte van de voormalige visafslag. De finish is 21km ten zuid-westen tegen de havenmuur van de visafslag in Medemblik. De finish is voor Muziekcafé Brakeboer ook bekend als ‘t Swarte Woifke.

De moeilijkheidsgraad is relatief hoog omdat het maar zelden glad water is (korte venijnige golven). Het meer is 1,5 tot 5m diep dit zorgt voor andere omstandigheden dan een diepe zee. Denk aan een koekenpan met daarin een laagje water wat heen en weer beweegt.

Het evenement is gestart als een soort weddenschap in de voorbereiding van Jan van Scheijndel (opgenomen in IMSHoF) voor zijn Kanaaloversteek. Hij was in der tijd trainer/coach van de in Den Haag gevestigde zwemvereniging DES. Toen hij uit Stavoren vertrok startte hij met een onmogelijk geachte opgave. Niemand dacht dat het mogelijk was. Het was ook nooit gedaan sinds de afsluiting in 1932. Andere (kortere) oversteken waren wel gepionierd voor 1932, maar die waren in 1969 lang vergeten.

De oversteek zelf begon onder relatief goede omstandigheden. Het weer sloeg echter snel om. De Kanaalzwemmer in spé werd zwaar op de proef gesteld door winden van minstens 7Bft. De bevolking van Medemblik was verbijsterd dat een mens hier toe in staat was. Een van de Medemblikkers was de vader van de huidige eigenaar van Muziekcafé Brakeboer. Samen met zwemvereniging DES is hij de initiatiefnemer van een jaarlijkse traditie die nog altijd voortleeft!

De wedstrijd heeft zeer onderscheiden winnaars gehad. Onder hen: IMSHoF ingehuldigden Maarten van der Weijden, Edith van Dijk en Monique Wildschut. Andere IMSHoF honorees die de tocht gedaan hebben zijn: Michael Read (GBR), Jacques Tuset (FRA), Irene van der Laan (NED, 18 successful crossings!), Annemie Landmeters (BEL), Gustavo Oriozabala (ARG), Lyndon Dunsbee (GBR) and Richard Broer (NED). Ned Denison (IRE) heeft zijn oversteek gedaan een dag na een afgelasting van de wedstrijd als gevolg van weersomstandigheden.

De inhuldigingsceremonie zal gehouden worden New York City op 2 mei 2020 – nadere details volgen later.
