IJsselmeer zwemmarathon, Next Week In The Netherlands
IJsselmeer zwemmarathon is one of the world’s classic marathon swims that was recognized as an (Honor Contributor – Organization) by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in its Class of 2020. It isone of the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims and will be held on September 11th this year.
The 22 km marathon swim is held annually from Stavoren to Medemblik in IJsselmeer, the Netherlands. The IJsselmeer was formerly in the ocean, but it is now a large lake. IJsselmeer can develop very difficult conditions with its winds.
The 50th annual race was held in 2019. Individual escort boats are required and some prize money is offered that has served as the Dutch Marathon Swimming National Championship.
Prize money for both males and females is €1000 for first place, €500 for second place, €250 for third place, €250 for a new record which is currently held by Marcel Schouten in 4 hours 18 minutes 1 second set in 2012.
