Ion Lazarenco, The Moldavian Open Water Swimming Star

Ion Lazarenco Tiron is the first Moldavian to do many things in the open water.

Taking and giving inspiration from his Irish open water colleagues and training partners, Lazarenco has done 3 Oceans Seven channels and completed an unprecedented 235 km 8-day stage swim, called the Swimming Marathon Nistru – Unites Moldova down the River Nistru in Moldova [see video above].

His Oceans Seven channels include a 4 hour 41 minute crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar, a 13 hour 34 minute crossing of the English Channel, and a tough 16 hour 23 minute crossing of the North Channel in 11.8ºC to 12.3ºC water. That is the essence of a globally-minded swimmer: a Moldavian living in Ireland who swam between England and France, Spain and Morocco, and Northern Ireland and Scotland.

He also attempted a 23 km swim from Bray to Wicklow and completed an Ice Mile in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland in 3.3ºC (37.9ºF) water. He participated in the Swim of Peace in Tunisia with Nejib Belhedi between November 7th-17th 2014 and completed the 26.4 km International Self-Transcendence Marathon Swim in Lake Zurich.
