iSwim With Apples

Many swimmers listen to music on their iPod (in their H2O Audio cases), follow other swimmers on their iPhone, read news and search swims in foreign lands on their iPad, and work on their MacBook Air.

Information overflow is enabled by their iPod, iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air – or their equivalents in the smartphone, BlackBerry, Android, Microsoft or Google worlds. Their virtual existence is tied to mobile devices and Internet-capable tools.

According to Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California Los Angeles, says receipt of an email, IM or text leads to a release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that causes us to want more information or virtual stimulation.

When a swim sparks your attention or a swimmer who interests you is performing, it is often hard to ignore email alerts, pings, texts or peaking at their GPS tracker while at work, commuting, at school or at home.

How are they swimming?

Where did they finish?

What was their time?

This is all possible to be connected with swims or swimmers in the physical world via the virtual world – and so very different from the days when carrier pigeons were used to inform the outside world of the exploits of channel swimmers.
