Japan International Open Water Swimming Schedule

The 19-race open water swimming series in Japan is now attracting an international following with athletes coming from Australia, Germany, Sweden, Korea, China, Taiwan and the United States. Shinozaki-san has also added a number of aquathlons (swim-run biathlons) to the JIOWSA series that starts off in spring in southern Okinawa and continues through the summer and fall as series heads north near Tokyo.
“We have added the aquathlon – both short and long courses – which are proving to be very popular,” explains Shinozaki. “The short aquathlon is a 500m ocean swim plus a 5 km run. The long aquathlon is a 1.5 km ocean swim followed by a 10 km run.”
From Okinawa to Honshu, Shinozaki-san and his staff and volunteers have created an enjoyable, safe, competitive open water swim series for all ages and abilities. From the pre-race beach clean-ups to comprehensive safety considerations, Shinozaki-san continues to promote and professionalize open water swimming in Japan (see his 2012 WOWSA nomination below).
