Kathryn Mason Nails The 25K Butterfly
Kathryn Mason was not slated as one of the favorites going into the Irish Long Distance Championship 17 km & The National Championship 17 km (Swim Ireland) in Lough Erne, but she gave an excellent performance nevertheless.The longest open water swim on the Irish calendar got longer…to 26.4 km as a test.
Swimming through volatile thunderstorms under the watchful eye of organiser Stephen Miller and team, Alison Cardwell won the 17km Championships in 4 hours 26 minutes with Paul Manning of Dublin finishing as the first man home in 4 hours 48 minutes followed by Scotland’s Colleen Blair who completed her 14th swim in Lough Erne in 4 hours 57 minutes.
Mason had previously completed the 17 km in 6 hours 9 minutes in 2009, but continued flying to the 26.4 km mark, reaching 25 km in 9 hours 45 minutes before she had to be withdrawn from the water as the storms passed closely by.
