Kathryn Mason Nails The 25K Butterfly

Kathryn Mason was not slated as one of the favorites going into the Irish Long Distance Championship 17 km & The National Championship 17 km (Swim Ireland) in Lough Erne, but she gave an excellent performance nevertheless.

The longest open water swim on the Irish calendar got longer…to 26.4 km as a test.

Swimming through volatile thunderstorms under the watchful eye of organiser Stephen Miller and team, Alison Cardwell won the 17km Championships in 4 hours 26 minutes with Paul Manning of Dublin finishing as the first man home in 4 hours 48 minutes followed by Scotland’s Colleen Blair who completed her 14th swim in Lough Erne in 4 hours 57 minutes.

Mason had previously completed the 17 km in 6 hours 9 minutes in 2009, but continued flying to the 26.4 km mark, reaching 25 km in 9 hours 45 minutes before she had to be withdrawn from the water as the storms passed closely by.
