Katie Grimes Nearly Joins Her Open Water Colleagues On The Olympic Podium
Katie Grimes has been swimming fast – among the highest echelon of swimmers – for some time. The precocious swimmer from Las Vegas has been banging into and swimming against the likes to Olympic medalists Erica Sullivan and Haley Anderson and world champion Ashley Twichell in the open water and pool for some time.
The 15-year-old continued to improve through the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in June right through the Olympic 800m freestyle finals in Tokyo where she finished right outside the podium. Grimes finished fourth in 8:19.38 behind Italy’s Simona Quadarella in 8:18.35.
In the Olympic 800m freestyle, there were many open water swimmers who competed: Katie Grimes (15, USA) 4th in 8:19.38, 8:17.05 in the preliminary heats
Kiah Melverton (24, Australia) 6th in 8:22.25, 8:20.45 in the preliminary heats
Sarah Kohler (27, Germany) 7th in 8:24.56, 8:17.33 in the preliminary heats
Anastasia Kirpichnikova (21, Russian Olympic Committee) 8th in 8:26.30, 8:18.77 in the preliminary heats
Mireia Belmonte (30, Spain) 8:26.71
Kristel Köbrich (35, Chile) 8:32.58
Viviane Jungblut (25, Brazil) 8:38.88
Kirpichnikova will participate in her fifth race on August 4th in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo Bay (after her preliminary and final races in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events).
