Katie Rowe Announces 100×100 Century Swim

With the water temperature dropping quickly, many open water swimmers are heading back to the warmer, more hospitable confines of their local swimming pools.
Besides the hard-core extreme swimmers who swim in the oceans, seas or lakes year-round, many open water swimmers gear up for their annual distance swimming set, the 100x100s (one hundred one hundreds or a century swim).
Katie Rowe of Swim Long Beach [shown above] announced the 100×100 set in her unique voice to swimmers in Southern California:
Hey swimmers and swimmerettes!
Ahhh yes. The holidays. A time for the things that really matter in life. Love. Peace. Ponies. Call of Duty. Pumpkin Spice. And Suffering. Yes, the 100x100s are back and ready to party!
You know the drill. Get to Belmont early. Air temp 42ºF [5.5ºC]. That makes you already so excited to get out of bed. Then you get in and do lap after lap after infernal lap. It seems like it’s never going to end. It doesn’t. For 3 or so hours.
SOUNDS AWESOME DOESN’T IT?!? Winning idea: come do them!!! Consider this your personal invite! All are welcome!
Where: Belmont.
When: Thursday, December 24th. No, you are not working. Liar. We know you have the day off.
Time: Be at the east side gate (by the big side parking lot. The side where the sun eventually rises). At 5:25 am. Parking meters? We don’t need no stinking parking meters! Since there is construction on Ocean they are not enforcing the meters. And yes, I am not just making this up. I have spoken with important people from “the city” who confirm this.
At 5:30 am sharp we run in, tear off our clothes, and start swimming at 5:35am. That’s SHARP. We got things to do here peeples.
And the best part, everyone gets one of the new awesome SWIM LONG BEACH stickers. Suitable for framing. On your rear window. It looks like this:
I know, rad right?!? Rumor has it USMS Santa will be there throwing out some free USMS stuff. No one wants to miss Santa!
What are the lanes like? I can’t predict exactly, but probably something like this. And of course this is subject to the whims and the crowd on the day.
-1:30 (that’s long course METERS. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Also be in very good shape). This lane will be done in 2.5 hours.
-Probably a 1:40 or 1:45 lane.
-Then a 1:45’ish Katie-fun lane. Yeah, sorry. I’m a sprinter. I can’t lie. I just can’t go that long without talking. Look! A squirrel! Shiny! We will do a mix of swimming, kicking (bring your fins!), pulling (bring your pull gear!), drills, stroke, underwaters, singing songs, and screwing around. Okay maybe not that last part. But probably.
-Then a 2-minute lane. This lane will be done in 3 hours 20 minutes.
Can you change lanes during? Of course! This is Master’s swimming for Pete’s sake. You can show up at 8 and do 12 of them if you want! Master’s = awesome!
It’s a good idea to bring a little something for your swim- juice, coco water, some nasty triathlon type bev, jack and coke. Up to you. And maybe a snax. Who doesn’t love a little fruit snax?
Cost is just a little piece of your soul, left in the pool for eternity. Price is so right!
Then…Christmas eve NAP!!!
What if you’ve been EXTRA naughty this year?? Then you also go this Saturday the 19th to swim them with our pals at CSULB! 7 am sharp. Kaia will be coaching, which means standing on deck watching others suffer and describing her recent trip to Hawaii to you between hundreds. Cost is $5. Parking is…wherever you can park at CSULB, which I’m not really sure. And I’m just guessing that it will be short course yards, which will make you an extra soft type person by not swimming as far as you would on Thursday. But, as always, you do you you special little snowflake you!
Happy Festivus to all, and to all a good night!
