The Irish Long Distance Swimming Association with the Camlough Lake Water Festival hosted the 1.5 km Round the Rock sea swim today in Warrenpoint Co.Down.

Jacqueline Galway reports, “Sunshine on shore, but a cool offshore breeze and choppy waters and tepid 17ºC water met 86 swimmers for the event listed among many exciting and challenging swims on the 2014 open water swimming calendar.”

Results for the top swimmers include:

Wetsuit Male:
1 John Callaghan 16.65
2 Niall McCarron 19.12
3 Kevin Magill 19.13

2 Maria Byrne 20.44
3 Daisy McIlheron 21.23

David Burke recalls, “On the shores off Carlingford lough, Connor Murphy was accepting the challenge of the dreaded blue envelope and succeeded in completing it. Weather was sunny with a slight onshore breeze, but the sea didn’t reflect it and was choppy enough at times. Jellyfish showed up to watch all the swimmers, and even a local seal was popping around getting a wee look at all the strangers. This was my first real open water swim to organise on behalf of the Camlough Lake Water Festival. As usual, all the team rowed in and came good. Without such great bunch of people, these events simply can and do not take place.”

Thanks to the water safety team, boat crew, lifeguards, kayakers, registration team, support crews, The Whistledown Hotel, and to all for their support,” said Galway. “The next local events will be the Rostrevor to Warrenpoint swim at Rostrevor Co.Down, followed by the Great Ulster Mile at Camlough Lake, both part of the H20PLAY Swim series.”
