Lake Lupa Hosts the Open Water Swimming Races at the 19th FINA World Championships

The 19th FINA World Championships are held in Hungary and will feature pool swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. The open water swimming races include the following:

  • June 26th 6 km Team Relay
  • June 27th 5 km men and 5 km women
  • June 29th 10 km women and 10 km men
  • June 30th 25 km men and 25 km women

There is a total of US$420,000 that will be awarded to the open water swimmers as follows:

  • 1st US$20,000
  • 2nd US$15,000
  • 3rd US$10,000
  • 4th US$6,000
  • 5th US$5,000
  • 6th US$4,000
  • 7th US$3,000
  • 8th US$1,000

Each country may enter a maximum of two males and two females per individual race. For the 6 km Team Relay can enter only one team comprised of two male and two female swimmers who will each swim 1.5 km.

The races will take place in Lake Lupa, located near the border of Budapest, and very close to river Danube [see above]. The swimmers will also have access to ice baths that are located near the Athletes’ Zone. Coaches and staff can also avail themselves to lactate testing. There will be two feeding pontoons located along the 10 km and 25 km courses. The expected average water temperature is expected between 21–26°C, but this is entirely dependent on the actual weather so FINA provided its regulations on wetsuits.
