TWO GOLDEN RULES OF OPEN WATER SWIMMING

The unexpected happens a lot in open water races, especially in swims with several turns and fields of hundreds—or thousands—of competitors. Goggles get knocked off. Hands get smeared with petroleum jelly. Errant elbows are caught. Turn buoys move unexpectedly.

  1. Expect the unexpected.
  2. Remain flexible.
