Lewis Pugh Champion of Marine Conservation Silver Man of the Year at WOWSA Awards

Lewis Pugh, the South African adventurer, environmental campaigner took the silver in the Man of the Year category of the WOWSA Awards.

Lewis Pugh is a true pioneer in the sport of open water swimming, known for his remarkable and unique achievements. He has completed numerous pioneering swims, including those in the North Pole, under the Antarctic ice sheet and in a glacial lake at 17,000 ft elevation on Mount Everest. In addition to his swimming achievements, Lewis serves as the United Nations Patron of the Oceans, making him a leading voice in the fight against ocean pollution and climate change.

In October 2022, Lewis completed the Coral Swim in the Red Sea, covering 123.42 km on a 16-day stage swim from Tiran Island in Saudi Arabia to Hurghada in Egypt. Lewis swam with oceanic whitetip sharks over some of the most precious coral in the world, and also across one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes leading to the Suez Canal. He swam to raise awareness of the projection that if we heat the planet by 2C, 99% of all living coral will disappear. He urged all nations gathered at Sharm el-Sheikh for COP27 to drastically cut their emissions, tackle the climate crisis and protect the world’s oceans.
