The 2021 Point to LaPointe Swim, hosted by the Recreation and Fitness Resources as a fundraiser for the Bayfield Rec Center, is changing this year due to COVID-19. The Point to LaPointe – 2021 Cliff Swim will deliver a challenging Lake Superior course for swimmers and breathtaking views for spectators atop Bayfield’s famous 75′ cliffs. The past year has been challenging and unpredictable. We need something to look forward to, and this event will not disappoint. Saturday, August 7, 2021, offers a chance of a lifetime for swimmers and spectators alike!
This one time, coastal, 5k triangular loop course is appropriate for the die-hard competitor and regular water enthusiasts alike. The course starts at Halvor Reiten Beach (adjacent to the Bayfield Rec Center), parallels the Brownstone Trail out towards Wild Rice Retreat and then finishes at beach where it began. The Point to LaPointe – 2021 Cliff Swim provides a unique opportunity for spectators to view the swim from the scenic Brownstone Trail, walking distance from the race start. The trail follows an old railroad grade just feet from the cliff’s edge, with a birds eye view 75′ above Lake Superior. Viewing is also available from the cliffs at Wild Rice Retreat.
Rather watch from the water? Apostle Island Cruises is hosting an unforgettable excursion to view the event aboard the Archipelago. The Archipelago will depart City Dock at 6:30 a.m. & return by 8:30 a.m., providing time to greet your swimmer at the finish line. This shoreline, South of Bayfield, offers some of the tallest & most beautiful cliffs in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore area. Watch Apostle Island Cruise Video
We are implementing extensive safety protocols, including changes to packet pick-up, social distancing, and a rolling start from Halvor Reiten Beach. The Rec Center staff, RFR board, and numerous volunteers are working diligently with the City of Bayfield, local business owners, U.S. Coast Guard, local E.M.S., and the Bayfield County Health Department to provide a race with COVID-19 compliant protocols.
Should COVID-19 force the cancellation of the Point to LaPointe – 2021 Cliff Swim, participants will receive a full refund, less online processing fees.
Swimmers may register two ways: 1. Pay the registration fee or 2. Register as a fundraiser and raise a minimum of $200 in pledges. For either option, CLICK HERE TO REGISTER Those registrants opting to fundraise may set up their individual fundraising page and start collecting pledges immediately.
