Looong Open Water Swim In Hawaii In Christmas

Race Director Jim Andersen announced the 29th Possibly Annual Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Invitational Rough-H2O Swim.

The 7K event that starts and finishes at the foot of the Diamond Head volcano in Waikiki Beach on Oahu is open to all U.S. Masters Swimming members.

The conditions can range from glassy smooth to very difficult with huge ocean swells, strong opposing currents, stiff winds, whitecap and all kinds of marine life including Portuguese Man-o-War. In every case, however, the underwater scenic beauty is something to behold.

This is a long distance event and the demands of swimming ability and conditioning are considerable,” summarized Jim. “The ocean is very unforgiving to those who get into trouble. We must have a good understanding of the swimmer’s ability or, if the swimmer is unknown to the Organizing Committee, they must be able to show that they have the ability to swim 7K in a reasonable amount of time before an Invitation will be extended.”

Applications for the 7K (4.33-mile) event on December 19th can be obtained from Jim Andersen or directly from The Daily News of Open Water Swimming. The Organizing Committee will review applications and then send out an Invitation.

Other than the turn buoys, the course is not marked and a time limit of four hours is enforced. To insure the safety of all swimmers, each entrant must have an escort.
