Lynne Cox To Be Featured On This American Life

Lynne Cox, one of history’s most adventurous explorers and among the most accomplished open water swimmers of all time, will be featured on This American Life (see www.thisamericanlife.org) this Friday, March 18th.

This American Life is a weekly public radio program and podcast. Each week a different theme and different kinds of stories are featured.

After her seminal book Swimming to Antarctica was published in 2004, Cox has written Grayson, South with the Sun: Roald Amundsen His Polar Explorations, and the Quest for Discovery, The Day the Whale Came, Open Water Swimming Manual: An Expert’s Survival Guide For Triathletes And Open Water Swimmers, Swimming in the Sink: An Episode of the Heart, and most recently, Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog.

In Tales of Al, Cox presents Al, a chocolate Newfoundland, and his water rescue training on Italy’s picturesque Lake Idroscalo. Cox writes about coming to know Al from puppyhood to become an expertly trained, highly specialized water rescue dog.

Many scenes take place in the Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs (SICS or Scuola Italiana Cani da Salvataggio) where dogs are taught for sea, land, and air rescue. For more information on SICS, visit here.

Tales of Al – The Water Rescue Dog

From the author of Swimming to Antarctica (“Thrilling, vivid, and lyrical”—Oliver Sacks) and Grayson (“Wondrous, unforgettable”—Carl Hiaasen)—the moving, inspiring story of Al, the ungainly, unruly, irresistible Newfoundland puppy who grows up to become a daring rescue dog—part of Italy’s elite, highly specialized corps of water rescue dogs who swoop out of helicopters and save lives.
