Making Waves And $400,000 For Swim Across America

Swim Across America Dallas raised over US$350,000 in its first year, a huge start for the charity swim that raised money for the Innovative Clinical Trials Center at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, Texas.

With 10 Olympic swimmers among the 225 participants, these swimmers really know how to raise money. Under the direction of Daniel Watters, Andrea Hayes Dickson, and Jeanne Cunningham, the event has raised the bar to US$400,000 in Year 2 with the kick-starter donation of US$25,000 by the Texas 7-Eleven Franchise Owners Association.

Swimmers and cancer survivors swim take part in the ½-mile, 1-mile and 2-mile events at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas to honor their friends and family that has been touched by cancer.

What we achieved last year was incredible,” said 1988 Olympian Watters, the Swim Across America Dallas co-chair. “We set our sights high, but this year we’re hoping to blow that amount out of the water, so to speak.”

As part of the event, swimmers will honor those who are unable to participate in the event by writing on rocks the names of loved ones who have battled cancer and will toss the rocks into the water as a group. Participants will also be able to share their stories on a “Why I Swim” banner. “These visuals really tie together why we are doing this,” said Dickson. “We love swimming and this event allows us to do what we’re passionate about while remembering those who are no longer with us and raising money for those who are still fighting this disease.”

In addition to the open water swim on June 9th, there will be an Olympic Swim Clinic the day before conducted by Olympic gold medalists Ryan Berube, Neil Walker and Josh Davis. Those who have raised more than US$250 for the open water event will receive free admission to the clinic, while others can register online for US$50. All proceeds from the clinic will benefit the Baylor Cancer Center.
