Marathon Swimming Soundly And Safety

The St. Vincent’s SWIM Across The Sound is on the short list of long swims. It is one of the world’s most well-organized marathon swims of at least 16K.

The 24rd annual 25K event to be held on August 6th is now open for online registration for all swimmers and team relays who wish to challenge themselves across the Long Island Sound.

Swimmers start at West Beach in Port Jefferson, New York and finish at Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Race Director Liz Fry explains, “It was a fundraiser event that started in 1987 and has raised millions of dollars over the years – US$480,000 in 2010 alone. Each team relay is required to raise a minimum of US$7,500, two-person relays must raise a minimum of US$3,500 and solo swimmers a minimum of US$1,500.

All the funds raised benefit the SWIM’s 36 cancer services, which provide financial support and care to patients and their families for the needs that health insurance companies do not cover in addition to support groups, education, prevention and wellness programs in the community
.”

Escort boats are provided for every solo swimmer and team, but participation in the solo category is limited. Interested swimmers are recommended to completely fill out the online application form as soon as possible. Liz is available to answer questions here.
