Part of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup circuit, it is supported by the Confederacion Argentina de Deportes Acuaticos and is one of the favorite stops on the professional marathon swimming circuit for many athletes.
The FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup circuit race is four loops of a 2.5K buoyed circuit in the Río Negro between the cities of Camen de Patagones and Viedma in the Patagonia region of Argentina. With fans lining the banks, the atmosphere and conditions (22-24°C water) are ideal for a electrifying competition.
In the Olympic year, the competition should be especially exciting. Additionally, the Santos Marathon Swim in Brazil and the Viedma Marathon will provide an additional incentive that will motivate the swimmers even more. They will jointly provide additional prize money of US$5,000 for the top five male and female swimmers in the FINA ranking after the two races.
And like many other pro races, the Viedma Marathon will hold a special 1.6K sprint race for US$3,000 two days before the main event.
