Martin Hobbs On The Move, Day 8
Courtesy of Martin Hobbs, Lake Malawi, Africa. South African swimmer Martin Hobbs is on the 9th day of his north-to-south stage swim crossing of Lake Malawi on the borders between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
As one of the most bio-diverse freshwater lakes in the world, Hobbs is facing all kinds of issues in his 581 km attempt – including large swarms of flies with untold numbers that look like giant billows of smoke coming off the water.
On Day 7, his support team reported, “The outside air temperature is roughly 34°C and the water temp is 31.5°C at the moment. Martin is averaging 9 to 10 km a day weather and heat dependent. He wants to be at 12-15 km [per day], so we are starting at 4:30 am now – with getting up to be in the water by 5:30.”
