Martin Strel - Water Is My Best Friend, It's My Life

Martin Strel – Water Is My Best Friend, It’s My Life

Martin Strel is off again – doing another unprecedented marathon swim.

This time, the 67-year-old Slovenian International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer will swim 50 km along Dubai Water Canal to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Arab Emirates.

His swim, estimated to take 24 hours, started yesterday on December 10th at Burj Al Arab (see below) and will finish at the Etihad Museum.

The swim – albeit long – is shorter than his previous swims that include stage swims in the Danube River, the Mississippi River. the Amazon River, the Krka River, Paraná River, and the Yangtze River.

His philosophy is similar to Michael Miller’s marathon swimming adage: walk in, swim across, and walk out. Strel said to CNN, “You have to start and then you have to finish. All that’s important is the result. [But I also] understand our oceans, rivers and lakes and there is pollution everywhere.”
