‘Membering Maggie

There are hundreds of memorial open water swims around the world.
The swims call tribute to and help carry on the memories and legacies of well-respected and well-liked members of the global open water swimming community.
Young Maggie Fischer (1982 – 1999) was one of these individuals. She was a musician and a lifeguard, a rower and a swimmer. She was scheduled to compete in the Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim before she passed away. In 1999, the swim was dedicated in her memory and renamed the Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim, a 5.44-mile ocean swim in Brightwaters, New York.
