Michele Daschbach Fast made her mark on the world…a quietly positive, incredibly friendly, always inspirational legacy.
Her family and friends, including many Olympians from various aquatic disciplines, honored the Seal Beach swimmer with a 3-mile Michele Daschbach Fast Memorial Ocean Swim today from Sunset Beach to Seal Beach.
A flat, calm, warm (65ºF) Pacific Ocean greeted the group of swimmers from all walks of life who participated in the point-to-point Ocean Swim as a tribute to the mother of three who was killed by a mass murderer in Seal Beach, California in 2011.
Olympic medalists Rebecca Soni, Ryan Bailey, and Joe Vargas, as well as the USA Women’s Junior National Team, and dozens of accomplished watermen and waterwomen from the Southern California beach cities came out to swim with Catalina Island in the background.
Fast grew up in northern California, the youngest of six children. The University of California Santa Barbara graduate met her husband in college and later moved to Seal Beach where they raised 3 children: Patrick, Laura, and Lisa.
She swam every morning in Seal Beach, touching everyone she met in and out of the water with her smile, sense of humor, compassion and selfless perspective of life.
Rooney Daschbach, Michele’s brother, organized the swim and got lifeguards, stand-up paddlers, escort boats, and kayakers to guide the pack from the shores of Sunset Beach, out towards Catalina Island, towards the Queen Mary, and around the pier at Seal Beach where Rooney arranged for the Big Red Bus to transport everyone back to the start where they paid tribute to a wonderful human being.
