The Midmar Mile, South Africa’s largest open water swim as well as the world’s, was officially granted recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records for having 13,755 finishers to its 2009 race.

As authorized by the Guinness Book, the official number of finishers of a timed, competitive race is the authorized number for world record-keeping purposes. It is not the number of entrants – or starters – or the number of individuals in a non-timed, mass participation event – which can all be different numbers.

Either way, the Midmar Mile is huge and is not to be missed during your open water swimming career.
