82-year-old Mike Arbuthnot of South Africa has started and stuck with open water swimming like no one else.

Earlier this year, he completed the 42nd edition of the aQuellé Midmar Mile. But what made his swim unique is that he swam his own 42nd edition in Midmar Dam. For 42 straight years, Arbuthnot has participated in the race that he has started.

The fact that I’m the only one to have done all of the Midmar Miles definitely is an incentive for me to keep going while I can. My training was fair this year, but the swim ended up going very well for me so I’m quite pleased.”

He is nominated for the World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year for his decades-long commitment to the sport.
