Due to exceptionally high winds in the week leading up to the scheduled Holidays for Hero’s relay race, the event had to be cancelled and Plan B put into place.

The event, sponsored by Nautilus Trust, was the second time Jersey has hosted this particular charity swim. Individual sponsors chose to support individual teams in the alternative 800-yard triangular course in a sheltered bay [see above]. The event ended up raising more than £24,000 for Holidays for Heroes Jersey which provides holidays in Jersey for injured service personnel and their families.

Despite all that the weather gods could throw at us, the true spirit of team work and respect won through in the end,” describes Charlie Gravett of the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club. “The full compliment of the seven 6-man teams assembled at Bouley Bay on Jersey’s north coast in surprisingly almost perfect conditions. Whilst at the same time, the south coast was being battered by winds of Force four to five. Fortunately, the swarms of painful jellyfish were absent from the coast for the first time in many weeks..

The final lap of the Heroes was a very emotional lap as many of the swimmers who had previously competed for individual teams swam in echelon formation behind the incredible paraplegic Nerys Pearce of the ‘Heroes’ who left many able-bodied swimmers in her wake. Once again the cheers of encouragement rang out as the competition drew to a rightful conclusion.

In the end true team work won out and the beneficiaries of our efforts as intended are the real winners. It is hoped to swim a similar event in twelve months, weather permitting
