Petar Stoychev is the Safety Delegate at today’s FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix. His job is not easy with course changes and rough water in the 15 km venue.

The former Minister of Sport in Bulgaria is all about conducting a safe and competitive race. He should know as the 11-time champion of the Grand Prix circuit who enjoyed an unparalleled career as a professional marathon swimmer.

But his career as Bulgaria’s Minister of Sport was, unfortunately, short-lived. The government that appointed him to this vaulted political position only lasted 3 months into his tenure.

The new government leaders came in and I was only a Minister for 3 months,” said the seriously-minded marathoner. “If I had known that I was only going to be in the position, I would have kept swimming.”

But he has turned to a new chapter in his life as a coach and FINA administer, serving as a Safety Delegate and Technical Delegate on both the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup and FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix.
